Color as the language of community

At the Awa Odori summer festival, hundreds of tenugui flutter to the beat of taiko drums. Each dance group weaves its motifs differently. A quick glance is enough to identify the group. Color becomes the language of the community.

Function in training: Kendo

In the kendo dojo, the fighter places the folded cloth under their helmet. It absorbs sweat, cushions blows, and helps keep their mind focused. After training, the damp cloth hangs dry on the wall a few minutes later.

Stories on Tatami: Rakugo

Rakugo storytellers use the tenugui as a versatile prop. With a simple flick of the wrist, the fabric becomes a wine bottle, a love letter, or a horse's reins. The audience adds their own imagination.

Historical merchants printed family emblems on tenugui and presented them as gifts. In modern companies, the tradition reappears in corporate editions. Even manga thieves tie the cloth over their faces. A mischievous reference to old robber legends.
