Tenugui – The Japanese cloth with history
Tenugui – The Japanese cloth with history
A tenugui (手拭い) is a traditional, rectangular cotton cloth (approx. 35 × 90 cm) that has been used in Japan for centuries in a variety of ways: for drying, as a headband, for gift wrapping, or as a decorative item. What I find particularly fascinating is that it's lightweight, quick-drying, and printed on both sides using traditional dyeing techniques such as chūsen or nassen —without any hemming.
How I discovered Tenugui
I discovered my first tenugui in 2024 in a small, hidden shop in Kyoto. The owner patiently explained the meaning and use of these cloths to me – and even showed me how to stylishly wrap gifts with them. I was immediately captivated: This combination of aesthetics, functionality, and tradition deeply impressed me.
Later, I learned more about the meaning of the motifs, the craftsmanship, and everyday life in Japan with tenugui. I encountered workshops that have been working with passion and precision for generations. My desire was clear: to bring these unique, authentic and carefully selected cloths to Europe.
Everyday hero – the versatile areas of application
- As a headband or scarf – for sports, hiking or on hot days
- As a hand or tea towel – in the kitchen, absorbent and quick-drying
- As gift wrapping – sustainable, beautiful and original
- As a decorative element – as a table runner, wall hanging or framed
- As an accessory – headband, belt or stylish tie
Tradition & Craftsmanship
Production usually takes place in small workshops in Japan—for example, in Kyoto or Sakai—where techniques such as chūsen (reservoir intaglio printing) and wet roller printing are cultivated. The result: vibrant colors that adorn both the front and back equally—each piece bears the hallmark of craftsmanship.
A special gift
A tenugui is an ideal gift:
- Practical and usable in everyday life
- Aesthetically and culturally charged
- Environmentally friendly – both product and packaging
- Personal – every pattern tells a story
