Furoshiki "Maizakura to Uguisu" (large)

Dancing cherry blossoms and the first song of spring

This atmospheric Furoshiki carries the name 大布 舞桜と鶯 (Ōfu Maizakura to Uguisu) – "large cloth, dancing cherry blossoms and Japanese bush warbler". The design captures a classic moment of Japanese spring poetry: at its centre opens a traditional round Marumado (円窓) window – that circular view from temples and tea houses that lets the beholder glimpse the garden beyond. Behind it delicate cherry-blossom branches bloom, on which a little Uguisu (鶯), the Japanese bush warbler, perches. Its melodic song is regarded in Japan as the voice of spring. Around the window swirl countless Maizakura (舞桜, "dancing cherry blossoms") in bright red, soft pink, pure white and golden ochre, as if carried through the air by a spring breeze. The deep black ground sets off the wealth of colour impressively and lends the motif a refined, almost theatrical presence.
