Dots full of tradition – Japanese small patterns in a modern guise

This sophisticated Furoshiki carries the name 大布 水玉和小紋 (Ōfu Mizutama Wa-Komon) – "large cloth, dots in Japanese small patterns". The design plays with a clever contrast: a diagonal line divides the cloth into deep navy blue and light pale blue. Across it are scattered large Mizutama (水玉, "water drops") – round dots that are not plain, however, but each contain their own traditional Wa-Komon (和小紋): Asanoha (hemp leaf), Shippō (Seven Treasures), Seigaiha (wave pattern), checks and stripes. Squarely placed Shippō blossoms in the two corners add graphic accents. The pattern is a modern homage to Japanese textile art, in which small dots act like windows onto a world of classic designs – a collector's piece for lovers of richly detailed Japanese aesthetics.
