The three friends of winter in stripes – festive symbols of good fortune

This tradition-rich Furoshiki carries the name 大布 松竹梅縞 (Ōfu Shōchikubai Shima) – "large cloth, pine-bamboo-plum in a striped pattern". Shōchikubai (松竹梅) is one of Japan's most important motifs of good fortune, uniting three plants known together as "the three friends of winter": the pine (松, Matsu) for longevity and constancy, the bamboo (竹, Take) for uprightness and growth, and the plum blossom (梅, Ume) for perseverance and new beginnings. In this design the three motifs are arranged in vertical stripes – small white pines on black, fine bamboo silhouettes on ochre and bright red plum blossoms on white and red. The bold colours and ornamental stripe layout give the cloth a festive, almost ceremonial character – ideal for New Year, weddings and other significant occasions.

Pflege und Hinweise

  • Washing: Machine washing up to 40 °C is perfectly fine. For strong colors (especially red/dark blue), we recommend washing separately the first time to prevent color bleeding.
  • Drying: Air dry is best. The shantung fabric dries quickly.
  • Ironing: The characteristic texture of the shantung fabric is best preserved if the cloth is shaken out after washing and air-dried. If necessary, iron on a low to medium heat setting.
  • Note: Do not use bleach to protect color brilliance.
