Furoshiki "Ume Zukushi" (large)

An abundance of plum blossoms – the first greeting of spring in red and blue

This cheerful Furoshiki carries the name 大布 梅 UME づくし (Ōfu Ume Zukushi) – "large cloth, plum-blossom collection". The design celebrates the Ume (梅), the Japanese plum, whose blossom traditionally heralds the approaching spring in Japan – often still in the snow and before the cherry blossoms. The motif shows an all-over, lively interplay of stylised Ume blossoms in bold red and contrasting navy blue, complemented by fine star and ray motifs. A striking blue border frames the composition and gives the cloth its finished, elegant character. In Japanese symbolism the plum blossom stands for perseverance, hope and new beginnings – qualities it has earned because it dares to bloom even in the cold.
