This vibrant tenugui is called彩り市松 ベージュ (Irodori Ichimatsu Beige) – “Colorful Ichimatsu Pattern on Beige”. It reinterprets the classic, checkerboard Ichimatsu (市松) pattern in a modern and playful way, combining various traditional elements in a colorful grid.

Within the individual squares of the design are iconic Japanese motifs such as the geometric Asanoha (麻の葉) (hemp leaf pattern), delicate Ume (梅) (plum blossoms), and classic stripes in vibrant red, green, purple, and pink. The variety of patterns gives the composition the appearance of a handcrafted textile patchwork, radiating a cheerful, warm atmosphere that is perfectly balanced by the neutral beige background.

Note on authenticity: As is typical with traditional tenugui, the short sides are unhemmed . This allows the cloth to dry faster. Slight fraying at first is normal; any excess threads can be carefully trimmed. The edge will stabilize itself after the first few washes.
