Tenugui “Mameshiba & Wave”

Playful amidst the waves

This tenugui combines classic Japanese design with a playful twist. It is crafted by the family-run company HAMAMONYO in Yokohama – a manufacturer with over 75 years of experience in the traditional wet-dyeing technique (Yokohama Nassen). The design is hand-printed onto a fine cotton fabric, bleached without chlorine and specially developed for tenugui production. It is soft, skin-friendly, and pleasantly lightweight.

At the center is a Mameshiba – a popular, cartoonish dog character in Japan – riding a wave with a joyful expression. It is surrounded by the classic wave pattern Seigaiha , which symbolizes both permanence and movement. This combination of humor and traditional aesthetics makes the motif particularly vibrant – familiar yet playfully modern.

Whether as a towel, gift wrapping (Furoshiki), headband, table runner or decoration: This Tenugui is versatile, easy to care for and accompanies everyday life with quiet quality.

The design was awarded the “Gold Award” of the OMOTENASHI Selection in 2022 – a recognition of Japanese hospitality, craftsmanship and design.
