Between raindrops and floral splendor
This tenugui captures the quiet beauty of Japan's rainy season. It is crafted by the family-run company HAMAMONYO in Yokohama – a manufacturer with over 75 years of experience in the traditional wet-dyeing technique (Yokohama Nassen). The design is hand-printed onto a fine cotton fabric, bleached without chlorine and specially developed for tenugui production. It is soft, skin-friendly, and pleasantly lightweight.
The scene depicts vibrant hydrangeas (紫陽花, ajisai) surrounded by raindrops from the May rainy season (五月雨, samidare) and traditional Japanese wagasa umbrellas. The scene symbolizes renewal and serenity—a moment typical of early summer in Japanese gardens. Soft light, clear colors, and flowing forms merge into a tranquil, elegant composition.
Whether as a towel, gift wrapping (Furoshiki), headband, table runner or decoration: This Tenugui is versatile, easy to care for and accompanies everyday life with quiet quality.
The design was awarded the “Gold Award” of the OMOTENASHI Selection in 2022 – a recognition of Japanese hospitality, craftsmanship and design.
