Full moonlight and silent legend
This tenugui combines Japanese symbolism with understated elegance. It is crafted by the family-run company HAMAMONYO in Yokohama – a manufacturer with over 75 years of experience in the traditional wet-dyeing technique (Yokohama Nassen). The design is hand-printed onto a fine cotton fabric, bleached without chlorine and specially developed for tenugui production. It is soft, skin-friendly, and pleasantly lightweight.
The design depicts two rabbits (兎) in front of a clear full moon – a poetic scene reminiscent of the Japanese moon-viewing festival Tsukimi (月見) . In Japan, the rabbit is considered a mythical figure visible in the moon. The motif appears serene yet vibrant, a balance between tradition and modern design.
Whether as a towel, gift wrapping (Furoshiki), headband, table runner or decoration: This Tenugui is versatile, easy to care for and accompanies everyday life with quiet quality.
The design was awarded the “Gold Award” of the OMOTENASHI Selection in 2022 – a recognition of Japanese hospitality, craftsmanship and design.
