This tenugui depicts Mount Fuji (富士山) , majestically soaring above a vast sea of clouds (雲海, unkai) , while cherry blossoms (桜, sakura) gently fall from the sky in the foreground. The delicate color palette of pink, blue, and violet creates a dreamy atmosphere reminiscent of early spring mornings—before the day awakens and the blossoms still dance in the air.
In the lower section, a stylized pagoda rises from the blanket of mist, reinforcing the impression of depth and stillness. A harmonious interplay of nature, tradition, and symbolism.
The cloth is produced by the long-established company HAMAMONYO in Yokohama, which has specialized in the Yokohama wet dyeing technique for over 75 years. The cotton fabric used is chlorine-free bleached, soft, skin-friendly, and specially developed for Tenugui production.
The design was awarded the “Gold Award” by the OMOTENASHI Selection – a mark of distinction for excellent Japanese craftsmanship and timeless design.
